SEO and how to use it

You’ve designed and built an amazing site … but if no-one can find it it’s completely useless. Here’s SEO explained and how you can boost your sites search engine optimisation

WHAT IS SEO?

SEO stands for Search engine optimization, the process of affecting the visibility of a website or web page on search engines. The better SEO for your website, the more times your site is viewed by potential customers. The more people that see your site, the higher your website or web page ranking increases in search engines also!

Why do you need SEO?

You need SEO to drive traffic to your site to make it successful otherwise, no matter how great it looks or how easy it is to use, you will be the only one seeing it. 91% of people use search engines to find what they want on the web, therefore you need to be on search engine results to get clients.

The great thing about being on search engine results is that the customer is already searching for a specific thing. If your site is a result of that search then you have a customer that is already interested it what you sell or do.

Getting indexed

The current most popular search engines are Google, Bing and Yahoo. These use ‘crawlers’ (internet bots that browse the web) to find web pages for their algorithmic search results. So basically this is how search engines find search results. You can link your website to these seach engines by signing up to their directory and including some code they provide into your site.

Poego has already done this for you with Google using the Google Webmaster Tools. This means we have told Google your web site in on the internet and included some extra code in the site that will let the ‘crawlers’ find it more easily.

Why did we use Google? 83% of people use google to search the web and so this is the most popular search engine, reaching the most potential clients for you.

Keywords or phrases

If a web page uses specific words or phrases that are frequently searched it will move higher up in search results. So for example if you put the phrase ‘how to use SEO’ on your web page, your page will be included in search results when people search ‘how to use SEO’.

This also works with key words. So if your site sells clothes, simple things like including words such as ‘shop’, ‘clothes’, ‘fashion’, ‘dresses’, ‘tops’, ‘trousers’, ‘shirts’ etc will help that web page move up the rankings in searches that include these words.

The titles of your pages or posts are some of the most important for search results. For example, if two web sites have a page about shoes and one has the title ‘The red shoes collection’ whilst the other has the title‘The red collection’, then the page with the heading ‘The red shoes collection’ will be ranked higher in search results for people searching for shoes.

So think about what people would search for when writing content for your site and try to put those keywords and phrases into your content.

Updating content

Updating your site regularly keeps it relevant and up-to-date. Updating content on your web site encourages the ‘crawlers’ used by search engines to keep coming back to your web pages.

A web site that updates every week will be higher on search engine results than a website updated every year. So update regularly. If you want to keep your web site the same but don’t want to fall in search ranking results then simply change something small like a single word, pressing save, and then changing it back. Sneaky but a web site update nonetheless.

Links

The more links from other websites linking to your web site or web page will help boost it’s SEO ranking as it prrove. So getting other websites to recommend your site and provide a link helps you. If the link instead of the site name has the word ‘shoes’ as a clickable link to your site for example, then search engines assume that your site must be to do with shoes, helping to boost your ranking in shoe related searches. The more popular the website that provides link to your page, the higher that link is rated by search engines, increasing your search ranking further.

Be aware you can not buy and make fake web sites with links to your web page to help boost it’s SEO ranking as search engines are aware of this.

So how can you get links to your website?

You can ask other web sites to recommend your site or page but note that there will usually be a cost involved with this. Some companies send products to bloggers to review the product on their blog site and provide a link to their site or relevant page. If the blogger has a lot of followers then search engines trust the link more, improving your ranking on search engines once again.

Lastly a free option is to use your web sites own social media. This means using sites like Facebook, Instagram and twitter to post information about your site with a link to it. You can do this yourself and if your post on any of these sites is popular, others may share your link. The more it’s shared, the more links to your site and so the higher up the site goes in search rankings. This is why social media is so important as it’s a free way to get potentially thousands of links to your site. The more links the more search engines trust your site.

Use these tips to help direct customers to your site.
Be aware it won’t get you to the top overnight, but eventually you will start seeing your site move up in relevant search results leading to more customers visiting your web site.
